How to Enable Text Messaging

Text Messaging provides you with the ability to send and receive text messages with your Talkroute Phone Number(s). Text messaging is not automatically enabled on phone numbers by default. To enable Text Messaging, please follow the steps below:

Important:

Additional verification or registration is required before outgoing messages can be sent. Incoming messaging can be activated without verification or registration. Please see our Toll-Free Text Verification (toll-free phone numbers) or 10DLC Campaign Registration (local phone numbers) article for more information.

Enable Text Messaging: Desktop/Web Apps

1. Login to the Talkroute desktop application or the web application (https//my.talkroute.com)

If you do not have the desktop application installed, please see our download link here: https://talkroute.com/downloads

2. Select the gear icon on the bottom left to access Settings & Preferences.

3. Once in the Settings & Preferences area, select the Text Messaging option under the left menu.

4. To enable text messaging for a Virtual Phone Number, select the On button next to the Virtual Phone Number under the enable column.

5. After choosing to activate text messaging for a Virtual Phone Number, you will have the option of both Sending & Receiving messages (requiring registration), or receiving only messaging (does not require registration). If you choose the receive messaging option, you can always decide to enable outgoing messaging at a later time.

If you selected to both Send & Receive Text Messages for your number, please proceed to step 6.

Trial Accounts: If you are under a trial period, you will be prompted to end your trial early to continue texting activation for your number. If you do not wish to end your trial period early, select the "No, Do Not End My Free Trial Early" option, and you will be provided with a temporary phone number that has text messaging enabled.

Note: It will take 1-3 hours for text messaging to be ready for use. It may take up to 3 days for text messaging to become active across all phone networks. If text messaging is not working after 3 days, please contact support@talkroute.com

Texting FAQs

What types of messages does Talkroute accept?
Talkroute can accept SMS and MMS sent from 10-digit US or Canada phone numbers. Please see below for a list of supported MMS attachments:
  • JPEG
  • PNG
  • GIF (up to 1.5MB)
  • Bitmap (BMP)
The maximum image file size is 15MB. The image resolution is 1280x960 when sent through Talkroute. (We attempt to preserve the resolution and aspect ratio as much as possible before scaling down).
Can I receive short code or verification texts?
Yes, Talkroute supports receiving messages from 5-6 digit short code numbers. However, please note that some services do not support sending verification text messages to non-wireless numbers (like VoIP or landline numbers), and we have no control over which services choose to allow or block these messages. If you are having trouble receiving a verification text, we recommend checking with the sender to see if they support sending to VoIP or landline numbers.
How long of a message can I send?
The maximum individual message length is 1000 characters. Please note that depending on the carrier receiving the message, it may be broken down into multiple segments.
Do I need to verify my phone number?
Yes, outgoing messages will not be delivered to most US carriers without an approved registration/verification. If you wish to only receive incoming text messages with your Virtual Phone Number, you do not need to go through the registration/verification process.
Can I send group messages?
Talkroute does not support group messages at this time. Any messages sent or received are 1 to 1.
Can I block text messages?
Yes, you can block 10-digit phone numbers under your account to prevent incoming calls and texts.

Desktop/Web: Select the text conversation in the messages area, then select the block number icon.

Mobile: Select the text conversation, tap the info icon, select the 3 dot menu at the top right side, then select block caller.
Can I disable texting?
Yes, please see our article here for more information: How to Disable Text Messaging
If you wish to fully disable texting for a specific phone number, please reach out to us at
.
Why does my number say texting is not available?
Some of the numbers we provide are voice only numbers. Numbers with texting availability show a texting bubble icon when you select the virtual phone number to add to your account. If you have selected a voice only number and wish to use texting, please reach out to us at  for available options.
