Understanding Talkroute Requirements and Limitations

Index

Introduction

This article provides a better understanding of the requirements and limitations for Talkroute account activations, phone numbers, calls, texts, and our applications. Talkroute is designed primarily for use within the US and Canada. While Talkroute can be used outside of the US and Canada, there are some key limitations.

Sign Up and Activation

When activating a Talkroute account, you must provide a US or Canadian credit or debit card with a major credit card logo, billing address, and contact phone number. We do not currently accept credit/debit cards or billing addresses outside of the US or Canada. Pre-paid cards cannot be used during account activation. All account charges are in US Dollars.

The use of a VPN or proxy connection is not allowed during the activation process or when updating payment information. This measure is implemented to prevent credit card fraud and ensures the protection of both consumers and Talkroute.

Additional cardholder verification may be required after an account has been activated.

Required Account Information:

  • Email Address
  • First and Last Name
  • 10-Digit Contact Phone Number
  • Billing Information
    • Name on Credit Card
    • US or Canada Billing Address, City, State/Province, and Zip/Postal Code (You must enter your billing address exactly as it appears on your card statement)
    • Card Number, Expiration Date, and Security Code (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, AMEX)

Virtual Phone Numbers

Talkroute provides 10-digit local US, Canada, and Toll-Free Virtual Phone Numbers. Most US, Canadian, and Toll-Free phone numbers can also be ported to our service. International phone numbers are not available for purchase or porting.

Outgoing Calls

With Talkroute Virtual Phone Numbers, outgoing calls can be made to 10-digit local and Toll-Free numbers within the contiguous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada. Outgoing calls from Toll-Free Virtual Phone Numbers to other Toll-Free numbers may be rejected by the receiving carrier. Please see Toll-Free to Toll-Free Calls for more information. Outgoing calls to international phone numbers will not connect.

Outgoing Texts

Outgoing text messages can be sent to any 10-digit local or Toll-Free number within the contiguous United States, Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada. Outgoing texts to international phone numbers cannot be sent.

Incoming Calls

US, Canada, Toll-Free, and International phone numbers can place incoming calls to local US and Canada Talkroute Virtual Phone Numbers. It's important to note that international rates may apply through the caller's phone provider if they are using a phone number outside of the US or Canada.

US, Canada, and Toll-Free phone numbers can place incoming calls to Toll-Free Talkroute Virtual Phone Numbers. US territories such as Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam or international phone numbers calling Toll-Free Talkroute Virtual Phone Numbers will not complete.

Incoming Texts

Incoming text messages can be received from US, Canada, Toll-Free, and International phone numbers. Replying to international text messages or US territories such as Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam is not allowed.

Toll-Free to Toll-Free Calls

Calls between Toll-Free numbers may not work due to the cost structure of the Toll-Free numbering system. This is a common behavior with Toll-Free phone numbers and is not specific to Talkroute. While Talkroute allows outgoing calls and forwarding from Toll-Free to Toll-Free numbers, we cannot guarantee the successful completion of all Toll-Free to Toll-Free calls.

If you experience issues with Toll-Free to Toll-Free calling, we recommend adding a local number to use on your Talkroute account.

Call Forwarding and Routing

Talkroute offers two ways of receiving incoming calls from a Virtual Phone Number: using a phone number independent of Talkroute (Forwarding) or through our Desktop and Web applications (Routing).

Call Forwarding (Forwarding Numbers)

Talkroute can forward incoming calls to any phone with a 10-digit US, Canada, or Toll-Free phone number. This can be any cell, landline, or VoIP phone that has active service independent of Talkroute. Forwarding is not allowed to US territories such as Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Guam, to international phone numbers, or to other Virtual Phone Numbers under the account.

Call Routing (Desktop Users)

Instead of using a physical phone, Talkroute can route incoming calls to a user via our Desktop and Web applications for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Talkroute only officially supports use within the US and Canada, though the desktop and web apps may work from other locations. Incoming calls cannot be routed to the mobile applications. Instead, the phone number of the mobile device would be added as a forwarding phone number.

FAQs

I have a US/Canada cell phone and phone number, but I am traveling outside of North America. Can I still receive and place calls using my cell phone with your service during my trip?

Yes, as long as your US/Canada phone number is still reachable on your cell phone outside of North America, you can receive and place calls using Talkroute. Please keep in mind that a data or WiFi connection is required to initiate outgoing calls, view your call history, send/receive text messages, view voicemail messages, and attend meetings. International usage rates through your cell provider may apply and we recommend checking with your cell phone provider before your trip for more information.

Cell Phones with non-US/Canada phone numbers and international SIM/eSIM Cards are not supported for calling.

Alternatively, you can receive and place calls using our Desktop and Web applications via a computer and internet connection.

I have a business in the US/Canada, or I am contracted by a business in the US/Canada, but I am located outside of North America. Can I still sign up for Talkroute?

We recommend scheduling a sales demo with our team so we can discuss your specific needs and use case. You can schedule a time that works best here: https://talkroute.com/sales-demo/

Can outgoing calls be made without using the desktop or mobile applications?

Yes, Talkroute offers a manual outbound dialing solution that can be enabled under your account. This allows you to place a call to your virtual number from a phone number listed under your forwarding number list to place your outgoing call. Incoming callers will still be able to dial your numbers and follow the normal call flow, but if a forwarding phone number dials the virtual number, they will be prompted to enter the phone number they wish to connect to.

Can I use Talkroute as my primary service provider for my cell, landline, or VoIP phone?

No, Talkroute does not provide service to any physical phones. Only our desktop and web applications provide calling capabilities without the use of an independent provider.
